The La Crosse School District is offering a new service to teachers this year, after a survey revealed the average teacher spends anywhere from $400 to $500 of their own money on supplies for their classroom.
Thanks to a new crowd funding website www.support-a-school.org teachers are able to raise money for things like projects, field trips or classroom extras with the help of the community.
"These are things the school district can't really afford to do without some outside help," David Stoeffler, Executive Director of the La Crosse Public Education Foundation, said. "The fundraising provides an opportunity for parents and other people in the community to get involved."
Stoeffler said last spring, a similar campaign was successful in raising enough money to send the Lincoln Middle School Show Choir to Chicago for a competition.
Anyone is able to donate to a teacher's request, with the fundraising campaigns lasting 60 days each.
Stoeffler said he isn't aware of any other schools in the immediate area trying out a crowd funding website as a way to help teachers fund projects in the classroom.
