Brayton Duin threw five touchdowns in the first half and the Onalaska Hilltoppers earned its first playoff win since 2011 Friday with a 42-7 victory over Sparta.
The Hilltoppers (9-1) will host New Richmond next Friday at 7 p.m. in the second round of the division 3 playoffs. New Richmond beat Medford 65-28 in round one.
Onalaska scored on its opening drive as Duin found Jalen Sample for a 34-yard touchdown. The two connected for another score later in the second quarter.
After a Sparta punt, Onalaska drove 91 yards in three plays to lead 14-0. Duin connected with Tyler Hughes and Sample for big gains before hitting Noah Fredrickson for the 26-yard touchdown to cap the drive.
Onalaska was poised for a third-straight touchdown on its next drive when Jacob Edwards intercepted Duin near the 20 yard line. Sparta drove the ball into Hilltoppers territory before fumbling. The ball was recovered by Onalaska's David Scheel.
Duin turned the takeaway into points, connecting with Fredrickson again. It was 21-0 Onalaska after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Duin found Hughes for a 26-yard touchdown to make it 28-0. On the ensuing kickoff, Jalen Zubich stripped the ball from the Sparta returner and took it back 42 yards for another touchdown.
Sparta got on the board with a Gregory Jacobs short touchdown run with 2:36 remaining in the half, but Onalaska responded quickly, scoring on Duin's touchdown pass to Sample 30 seconds before the break.
There was a running clock in the second half, and neither team scored.
Sparta ends its season 6-4 after qualifying for its first postseason since 2005.
