Brett Kasper threw two touchdowns, and CJ Blackburn ran for two scores as the fifth-ranked UW-Oshkosh Titans beat the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse 51-29 Saturday at Titan Stadium.
UW-L (2-4 WIAC, 5-4 overall) has now lost four games in a row.
The Titans (5-1 WIAC, 8-1 overall) took its opening drive for a score, then used a Tarek Yaeggi interception to add a field goal and lead 9-0 midway through the first quarter.
The Eagles responded with a five-play, 80-yard drive to pull within 9-7. Yaeggi was hit near the goal line, fumbled the football, but was fortunate to have Joel Oxton nearby to recover for the score.
UW-Oshkosh scored on its next drive when Brett Kasper found Blackburn for a 11-yard pass, then intercepted Ben Schramski to setup another touchdown for a 23-7 lead. The Titans had 10 points off UW-L's turnovers and owned a nearly 13-minute time of possession advantage.
Yet the Eagles found ways to score against the WIAC's best defense, as Yaeggi connected with Nick Holcomb for a 4-yard touchdown with 5:41 left in the half to trim the deficit to 23-14.
Kasper found Jacob Grant for a 9-yard pass in the third quarter to give the Titans a 30-14 lead, but Yaeggi found Joel Oxton for a 15-yard score nearly six minutes later to keep UW-L within 30-22. Yaeggi finished 27 of 44 for 285 yards and three touchdowns to go with his interception. Oxton had five catches for 65 yards.
But each time the Eagles applied pressure, the Titans were able to respond with a drive of its own. Oshkosh scored the next 21 points to pull away, including two touchdown runs from Blackburn. The senior finished with 92 yards rushing and seven catches for 70 yards receiving for three total touchdowns.
Yaeggi hit Ryan Kruser for a 10-yard touchdown with four minutes remaining, bringing the Eagles to within 51-29. Kruser had 12 catches for 100 yards.
UW-L will finish the season next Saturday at home vs 11th ranked UW-Platteville. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. at Roger Harring Stadium.
