OSHKOSH (WKOW) – Republican Sen. Ron Johnson has won re-election in the rematch against Democrat Russ Feingold.
The Associated Press called the race for Johnson just after 10:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Johnson trailed Feingold in several polls by as much as double digits a few weeks ago, but the last Marquette Law School poll released before the election showed the race in a statistical tie.
At the Oshkosh Convention Center at his victory party, Johnson told his supporters his win will allow him to work with House Speaker Paul Ryan and others "...to save America."
In a news conference following his victory speech, Johnson said his ability to surpass electoral projections helped Donald Trump prevail in the Badger state.
Johnson also said working on measures to enhance economic vitality, protect the country from ISIS-inspired attacks, and replace the Affordable Care Act were at the top of his agenda.
When asked if he would support a prosecution of Hilary Clinton over violations in her handling of classified information in her emails as secretary of state, Johnson sounded unambiguous. "She should be held accountable," he said.
Johnson's campaign released a statement on his victory:
“I made two promises to Wisconsinites – to always tell them the truth, and to never vote with my re-election in mind – and I am honored that they have shown their faith in me for a second and final term. Together, we can find areas of agreement to take on Washington dysfunction and grow our economy, protect our national security, and fix our country’s problems. I’d like to thank all the supporters who worked so hard for this victory, and everyone across Wisconsin who offered their thoughts and prayers as I traveled across this great state and worked to get results in their communities.”
House Speaker Paul Ryan's campaign released a statement in support of Johnson. It is below:
"Ron Johnson – like he has his whole life – earned this tonight. He is a work-horse who does not shy away from a fight because he is an effective conservative who gets things done. Ron is a man of integrity. I’ve seen that up close over the last six years, and I am just glad the rest of Wisconsin realized that tonight. He will be a great representative for our state, and I look forward to working with him in the next Congress."
The Club for Growth PAC also released a statement about Sen. Johnson winning re-election. It is below:
“Wisconsin won a huge victory tonight by re-electing Ron Johnson,” said Club for Growth PAC President David McIntosh. “Club for Growth PAC believed that Ron Johnson could win re-election even when other groups had shifted their resources elsewhere, and that’s why the Club’s Super PAC was running independent expenditures in Wisconsin in mid-October. I am pleased that other groups followed CFG Action back to Wisconsin and did a great job of supporting him. Tonight economic conservatives are celebrating a great victory by Ron over a far-left liberal ideologue.”
