HBO this week released a promotional trailer for the soon-to-be-released documentary film about a 2014 case in which two Wisconsin girls nearly stabbed a classmate to death in order to appease the fictional character Slender Man.
The film, "Beware the Slender Man" premiers Jan. 23 on the premium cable network, according to an HBO tweet.
The film runs about two hours long and played in front of a large crowd at Milwaukee's Oriental Theater during this year's Milwaukee Film Festival.
The film explores the mythology of the character and includes footage of the accused attackers, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, discussing the incident with detectives. They said hey were motivated by the fictional character to stab their friend 19 times on Memorial Day and leave her for dead.
Director Irene Taylor Brodsky said working with the families allowed her to have an open mind when approaching the details of the case.
“When you spend a few years with the families or the Geysers and the Weiers, we developed a mutual respect and a relationship,” Brodsky said. “I think it helped me remove any blinders I may have had going into this project so I think it helped me be more fair really.”
The victim’s family did not participate in the documentary.
Charged as adults with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, both girls are pleading not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. They have remained in custody since they were arrested on the same day as the stabbing.
