Liam Ford scored the go-ahead touchdown with under five minutes remaining, then intercepted Winona quarterback Riley Bosteter to seal a 31-28 win for Benilde-St. Margaret's Friday in the MSHSL Class 4A championship game.
It is the first state title for the Red Knights. Winona (11-2) finishes runner-up for the second time after falling in the 1987 championship game, its only other appearance in the finals.
Benilde-St. Margaret's led 3-0 after one quarter, then the teams combined for 35 points in the second quarter. Bosteter threw two touchdowns in the quarter, first a 37-yard pass to Dakota Matthees to make it 7-3, then a 45-yard pass to Jonah Boelter to give Winona a 21-17 lead at halftime.
In between, Dan Jonsgaard returned a fumble 37 yards for a score to make it 14-10.
Ford scored his first rushing touchdown in the third quarter to give Benilde the lead at 24-21. He finished the game with 84 yards on 18 carries in relief of an injured Ricky Floyd.
Bosteter finished six of 16 for 124 yards and two touchdowns, but threw three interceptions. Terrell Hall completed three of four passes for 74 yards, including a 37-yard pass to Matthees on the first play of the fourth quarter to give Winona a 28-24 lead.
Alex Franzwa led the Winhawks with 105 yards rushing on 10 carries.
