Concerns about the impact of continued budget cuts in the UW system are on the minds of students and staff at the UW-La Crosse.

In the Cartwright Center's Port-o-Call Tuesday night, they had the chance to ask questions directly of UW System President Ray Cross, and Representative Jill Billings at a campus symposium. Concerns included the impact of state budget cuts on class sizes, job security and the time it takes students to graduate.

"There have been budget cuts in the last budget and that has affected the university," said La Crosse State Rep. Jill Billings. "In Madison some of the researchers that have brought in money with grants and great work have left for other universities."

President Ray Cross spoke on the needs of the budget going into the future.

"The future of this state depends on an educated populous," Cross said. "Research shows that 99% of all new jobs require some post-secondary education. Economic measures aren't the only measures of success, quality of life factors into that [also]."

The Board of Regents is asking lawmakers and Governor Walker for an increase of $42.5 million to the UW System budget.
