Aquinas, Onalaska, G-E-T, Bangor earn top regional seeds

The WIAA released playoff brackets Sunday for the upcoming 2017 Girls Basketball Tournament with few surprises regarding top seeds.

La Crosse Aquinas received a #1 seed for sectional #3 in division 4. The Blugolds (19-0) are the top-ranked team in the state according to the coaches poll, and are closing in on a third straight MVC title.

Melrose-Mindoro (20-0), ranked 4th in division 4, received a #2 seed in the sectional, while Dairyland Conference rival C-FC (16-2) received a #3 seed. Only one of the three teams will advance to the sectional finals.

Onalaska (16-5) received a #1 seed for sectional #1 in division 2. Two of the Hilltoppers' losses have come to Aquinas. Holmen received a #3 seed, while La Crosse Logan received a #7 seed and La Crosse Central a #8 seed.

In division 3, Coulee Conference leader G-E-T received a #1 seed for sectional #1. The Red Hawks own a .5 game lead over West Salem in the Coulee standings. West Salem received a #3 seed.

In division 5, Scenic Bluffs champion Bangor (18-3) received a #1 seed for sectional #3. The Cardinals are ranked 4th in the latest coaches poll.

Regional tournament action begins February 21 with sectionals scheduled for March 2 and 4. The state tournament is March 9-11 at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
