La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

The Great Rivers United Way kicked off its annual community wide campaign Tuesday morning with just under a million raised by so-called "Pacesetter" organizations.

Each of the 12 organizations presented how much they each raised at a kick-off breakfast Tuesday morning in the Cargill Room downtown. Those donations "set the pace" so-to-speak for the rest of The United Way's 2017-2018 campaign. In total, they raised $974,670.15. In terms of how many people that affects in United Way programs, that's over 75,000 people in the community.

"It just gives us momentum, it gets us going," said campaign chair Mike Klauke. "It shows the community that yes, we are going to hit the goal and they have worked hard, they've had fun, and it just sort of sets the campaign and gets it going on the right tone."

The Pacesetters covered nearly half of the goal for 2017-2018. If you would like to donate, you can do to their website at www.gruw.org or text 'WEWIN' to 30306.
