Mayo Clinic offers tips on social media safety

Posted: Updated:

Social media safety is becoming more of a concern as children, and adults for that matter, spend more time online.

That's why Mayo Clinic Health System is teaching a special social media safety course to help parents protect their children from online bullying and practice safe, healthy online behavior.  Child Therapist, Karen Wagner says online threats can come from anywhere, not just online predators.

"You know certainly I hear a lot about young people sexting, whether that's just sending sexually explicit dialogue or sending sexually explicit pictures pictures, I find that a lot of young people don't know the legalities of that and how serious it can really be," says Wagner.

Wagner also gave out some pointers to parents:

Have a conversation with your child, ask them if they are being bullied, and keep lines of communication open.  She says to also monitor your kids either using an app or software that tracks your child's online activity.  She also stresses the importance of making sure you have access to all your kids usernames and passwords.
