One of the traditions leading up to Applefest for over the past two decades has been an annual apple pie bake at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
500 apple pies are made each year from scratch by a crew of volunteers. The only way to get one is by pre-order, typically those sell out in a matter of days. The money raised from the sale goes toward funding volunteer work camp crews in the summer time.
"We use a lot of those dollars to help fund part of that work camp program," said volunteer Gary Beardmore. "Last year we had 63 students that went out east, and now again with the hurricanes this year they are going to be very busy."
Many volunteers have been taking part in the apple pie bake for year, some even from the very first time over 25 years ago.
