The monthly Village of Holmen meeting became a heated exchange among some members on Thursday night.
The dispute followed the recent decision by the Holmen Fire Commission to keep Fire Chief Paul Menches on the department. Menches pleaded guilty to an OWI, his second offense, last month. The Fire Board, including Village Board representatives Chuck Olson and Bill Ebner voted to to reprimand Menches.
Those events led up to the village meeting and an item call for a "reorganization of committees". Shortly after statements from both Olson and Ebner regarding their roles as Fire Board Representatives and how they should remain on the commission, a 4-3 vote removed them from their positions.
Afterward Olson stated, "This has everything to do with the fact that we made a decision along with the rest of the Fire Board members to retain the Chief, to reprimand him, which we did. The four members of the village board who voted to remove us from that position tonight were the ones who didn't feel we made the right decision."
Village President Nancy Proctor said it was a matter of keeping the Village Board informed and that was not the case.
"We had expected to be included in the votes that were made down there, as to the follow-up to the Chief's OWI. The decision was made by then. They didn't bring it to the board until it was done. So, we really didn't have a chance to voice our opinions," she said.
