Investigating the brutal altercation Thursday morning that lead to a stabbing was made clearer to police thanks to La Crosse's community safe cam system.
"I think it's pretty clear how the incident occurred," said Captain Jason Melby. "As you can see from the video we have, this was an unprovoked attack, the one individual that ended up getting stabbed was just standing there with his arms at his side."
Police say they have access to 80-100 cameras downtown that feed into a system at city hall.
"Being able to verify what actually happened is part of being able to determine who to charge and who not to charge in the incident."
Community members in the downtown like James Cherf, owner of By James Galleries, say they already feel a peace of mind knowing incidents can be solved quickly and justice given out swiftly.
"I have personally benefited from the downtown safety cam," Cherf said. "I've had vandalism occur. Unfortunately that does occur after a lively weekend many times, and in every case they were able to resolve the issue."
