October is breast cancer awareness month, an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease.
Health experts recommend annual mammograms once a woman reaches 40 years old, but self breast exams are always encouraged to check for unusual lumps.
"There are some women that have a family history, maybe their mother had breast cancer at age 35, they would start screening 10 years earlier with their screening mammograms," Eileen Williams, a physician assistant at Gundersen Health System, said.
According to Williams, only around five percent of breast cancer cases are due to an identified gene mutation.
Stage IV breast cancer is not considered curable, only manageable, Williams said. As a result, doctors urge postmenopausal women to seek preventitive measures.
