The River City Water Ski Show Team is celebrating 45 years of performing for the La Crosse area.
They perform throughout the spring and summer including at Riverfest and most Wednesday nights at Airport Beach but what most people don't know is that they do all of this for free.
"It started out as a group of friends. We're a group of friends now and a family. We back each other up, support each other. Through every fall we support each other," said team member Dana Gibbons.
Dana's parents were part of the original group that started the team. "They got together, started water skiing, met up with Tommy Bartlett skiers, became friends and they encouraged them to start a ski club here in La Crosse," said Gibbons.
The team is made up of volunteers who perform for free. Since they don't have the funds to have their own year round facility they cram their training
in from May until August.
"My step daughter just started to jump at the end of the season. She has the bruises on her butt to prove it but it's a lot of fun," said Gibbons.
The team loves being on the water but they also love watching others experience it for the first time.
"Love it. Love it. From the first show in 1972 to our last show August 9th this year we've had an amazing turn out, amazing fans and we want to keep it going
and keep it strong for 45 more years," said Gibbons.
The River City Water Ski Show Team is made up of 70 volunteers who do everything from boat repairs to making costumes. You can help cover costs at a fundraiser Saturday, October 14 at 4:00 p.m. at Tom Sawyer's in La Crosse. It's a family friendly event with live music from Scooter and Nate.
