La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

The Common Council voted to repeal the Historic Preservation Commission designation for a downtown building at a meeting on Thursday night.

The 10-3 vote means that Pischke Motors can move forward with demolition of the building. The building features the mural of the War Eagle Riverboat on the side at 520 3rd St. S. The building has stood vacant for more than a decade and is in serious need of repair.

Auto dealer Rahn Pischke argued that the building did not meet the criteria of historic preservation.

Barb Kooiman specializes in historic building preservation, and she said the building was once home to some of the earliest Bohemian immigrants in La Crosse.

After a public hearing, the council voted to remove the historic status of the building. Pischke now controls the building's future, saying he hopes to remove it and expand his dealership onto the property.
