Onalaska Luther's David Vannucchi is once again competing for the State title.
"It was a strange feeling finishing and it was really fulfilling and it leaves you really really desiring to do it again," Vannucchi Said.
This weekend David will have the chance to relive that moment.
"Having won last year and having the defense this year, it puts a little bit of pressure on me but it is all about having confidence and going in mentally strong and just holding on," Vannucchi added.
For as talented as he is, David is also incredibly humble.
"Perhaps the best I could tell you happened at the state track meet," Head Coach Kevin Lisk said. "When he finished his mile, the kid who beat him was throwing up at the award stand and David went and got a trash can and brought it to him so the kid could have something and he wasn't left alone."
"He is always running with us during the meets," Junior Runner Thomas Walsh said. "He is always encouraging us and helping us through whatever we need."
David will not be alone this weekend as this is the second year the team has qualified for state, and they believe that together, anything is possible.
"I told them anything that whether it is success, whether it is hard times we do it together," Coach Lisk said. "When we are together, we are stronger than we are individually."
"The whole race, that was the theme, together," Vannucchi said. "So me ,Sam, and Quaid all working together as a pack, drafting off each other helping them pull through to the line it worked we are going as a team and that is just crazy."
The pressure is really on the number four and five runners this weekend
"Thankfully they have been coming along during whole season," Vannucchi said. "They have been hitting all of the workouts, they have been getting faster and faster and faster and they are who is really going to help us at the state meet."
The Onalaska Luther team will compete in the Division Three race in Wisconsin Rapids at 2:35 pm on Saturday.
