The Onalaska girls won't be the favorite to win the division one title at the WIAA State Cross Country meet Saturday.
But they will serve notice that they will be a team to contend with in the next few years.
The Hilltoppers took second at the Sectional meet in Menomonie last Saturday to qualify for State.
Kora Malacek led the way with a second place finish.
Malacek is part of a group that features seven freshman on varsity for the Hilltoppers, including her triplet sisters, Lydia and Amalia.
The neat thing about this team is that it's a team from top to bottom. There's many girls that weren't able to compete on the varsity but they're all hear supporting this team. This team is very, very close and they believe in one another. It's really neat to see a team be that close from top to bottom," said head coach Darin Shepardson.
"The summer is when we really became a team, I think. We did this thing at Camp Chetek where we spent a week with each other. I think a lot of it was just our team cheering each other on and telling us how to go and where to go. I'm really happy our entire team is going," said Kora Malacek.
Onalaska will run at noon Saturday in the Division 1 race at Wisconsin Rapids.
