Freezing rain and snow led to slippery roads Thursday forcing some schools to close early.
Schools in more than 50 communities closed, including Sparta, Eau Claire, Menomonie, Neillsville, and Ladysmith.
That freezing rain and snow can also cause problems for people who are out shoveling and snow-blowing. Gundersen Health System says they see an uptick in emergency room visits and injuries due to people slipping and falling on the sidewalks.
It is important to keep your sidewalks salted and walk slowly in these slippery conditions. Gundersen Trauma and Injury Prevention Coordinator Megan Anderson says if you have fallen on the ice it is important to seek medical attention if you feel you may be injured.
"I would say definitely if you feel like you have injured a bone or really strained a muscle but definitely if you have hit your head and are kind of feeling dizzy or might have a concussion, seek medical attention," said Anderson.
Anderson also says that having the right gear, such as shoes or boots with grips can help prevent falls and injuries.
