The La Crosse Fire Department is one step closer to a new fire safety house.
Firefighters use the fire safety house to teach fire prevention. Captain Kyle Soden with the La Crosse Fire Department said the current safety house is more than 30 years old.
The new trailer will include modern fire technology and will be wheelchair accessible.
"What it is going to allow us to do is expand our program to actually allow it to reach more people, especially with being able to be handicapped accessible, and also to be able to expand our message with the trailer," Soden said.
The La Crosse City Council passed a resolution to approve donations from Kwik Trip and LHI for the new fire safety house. Soden says that those donations cover more than half of the overall $65,000 cost.
"I think they see the value in our fire prevention program and what it gives," he said. "It's really great to know that we have partners in the community that will allow us to meet our goals for what we provide to the community."
Soden hops to raise the remaining funds by June. He wants to use the new fire safety house for fall fire prevention training.
