The Holmen Fire Department said a small tire compressor was the cause of Friday's fire that destroyed a 12 unit apartment building in Holmen.
Fire Chief Paul Menches said a car parked in Unit 2 caught fire.
The owner of a car was using a compact tire fix it kit which was plugged into the vehicle's lighter. It was being used to inflate a tire. The owner went back into the apartment for a few minutes and upon returning, saw that the dash caught fire where the compressor was plugged in.
The fire spread from the garage to a large portion of the rest of the building. Although there were no injuries, all the residents were forced to find housing elsewhere. Some residents lost everything in the fire.
The Holmen community stepped up with food and cash donations in the wake of the fire. Several thousand dollars in cash was raised less than a day after the fire along with donations of clothing.
According to the Holmen Police Department, they're asking that people no longer donate any material goods until they have information on specific needs from the apartment's residents.
The department said on their Facebook page that Holmen Cares would be handling the coordination of donations to the victims. They're in the process of posting a list of needs for the victims.
