The La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce is celebrating a major milestone.
The leadership group marks 150 years in the community this year.
La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat made a proclamation on Tuesday morning that recognizes Monday, March 5, 2018 as the official 150-year anniversary.
Vicki Markussen, Executive Director of the La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce, says La Crosse has one of the oldest commerce groups in the country.
"Our Chamber of Commerce would not be here if not for our businesses," Markussen said. "They're the ones that got together 150 years ago and said, 'How do we help each other grow? How do we attract businesses?' So, our success is a sign of their success."
Started in 1868, Markussen says previous leaders shaped the community by advocating for the creation of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, creating Oktoberfest, and laying the foundation for Downtown Mainstreet, Inc. among other involvement.
"They've done some amazing things for our community, and I look at that as inspiration for what is possible," Markussen said. "If they can do it back then when they didn't have the technology and all of the businesses we have in this day and age, it kind of makes anything in the future possible."
