La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

La Crosse area students had the day off from school on February 9 and with help from the La Crosse YMCA, they can spend the day having fun while learning.

The YMCA's "Kids' Day Off" program provides a constructive outlet for children on scheduled days off from school.

"During the day parents need to go to work, they need to make a living and we know there is a huge demand for that in the community." Describes La Crosse YMCA School Age Administrator, Nathan Torres.

The program pairs young students with YMCA staff members for a day full of learning and activities, in an effort to make days off from school more constructive for young students.

Torres elaborates on the inspiration behind the program, "We know that a lot of kids maybe on some of these days (off), especially during the winter, spend a lot of time in front of screens," Torres continues, "We get them here at Irving Pertzsch in this gym we run them around, we put them in front of educational opportunities."

Each scheduled day off, the program features various educational opportunities for children.

On February 9 the La Crosse YMCA collaborated with WisCorps to bring their "Critter Mobile" to school, providing kids a hands-on experience with animals they don't typically interact with.

Featured animals at the event include a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach and a species of endangered turtle.
