Whitehall, WI (WXOW) - -

After a more than four decade career in law enforcement, the last 12 as sheriff, Richard Anderson said he won't run for re-election in the fall.

Anderson has spent the last 38 years in Trempealeau County said in a statement released Monday.

In it, he said, "It has not only been an absolute privilege to be your Sheriff, but an outstanding honor to have served you all." He later added, "As I look forward to completing my final year in office and reflect upon my many years of service, I can proclaim that I am tremendously proud to be a citizen of Trempealeau County."

He remarked on the accomplishments achieved during his tenure as sheriff including equipment upgrades to protect officers and the public; training for staff, and the combating the drug problem in the county.

On personal level, he also thanked his wife and her support during his career. He said he looked forward to spending more time with her and their five grandchildren.

While he wouldn't name the person in the statement, Anderson did state he would endorse the long-serving law enforcement member when he announces his candidacy later this year.
