State Senators travel to Fillmore County to consider new Veterans Home

PRESTON, Minn. (KTTC) -- -

"I made a promise to myself that I would try to do what I could for those folks that didn't come back quite as unscathed as I did," Ron Scheeval is one of many trying to get a veterans home up and running in Fillmore county.

Data suggests there is a need for one in the Southeast part of the state.

That's why State Senators were in the area Monday looking at potential sites.

"Fillmore county has graciously stepped forward, we have two communities here in the county, Spring Valley and Preston who have donated land so it just makes sense," Senator Jeremy Miller, Republican of Winona, said.

State senators are in southeast Minnesota because it has 33 percent of the state's veterans, and the closest veterans home is more than 130 miles away.

"The idea is to have a home within 70-80 miles of a veterans home," Scheeval said.

But it will come with a rather steep price tag.

"From the state level we need to secure the $10 million in bonding funds and then the federal government would actually match those two-to-one to fund the $30 million project here in southeastern Minnesota," Miller said.

However, for that 30 million dollar price tag, the facility will initially house 72 beds and lead to the employment of more than three hundred workers.

According to Scheeval, after all the volunteer work he's done to promote the project, it's out of his hands now.

"We'd really like to see it happen and happen soon," Scheeval said.
