The Diocese of La Crosse celebrates 150 years in the community with a year full of celebrations beginning in Prairie Du Chien on Saturday.
The Diocese's oldest church, Saint Gabriel's hosts the opening event.
Diocese officials aim to start the year of celebrations where they began in 1868 in an effort to remember the past when planning for the future.
"The future is quite different, the church is making some new ways of being. The holy father is calling us to a new challenge, Pope Francis is calling us differently than Pope John Paul did, but essentially it's the same gospel," Diocese of La Crosse's Bishop William Patrick Callahan explains.
Future celebrations are planned for; Tomah, Arcadia, La Crosse and more of the 19 counties the Diocese serves.
