The La Crosse Does are a team of female basketball players ages 50 and above that compete in the Granny Basketball League, and on Saturday they hosted their first tournament.
The league consists of 26 teams spanning across eight states. The tournament raised funds for the La Crosse Parks and Recreation Girls Basketball Team while offering players a chance to get active and spend time with friends.
For many players, this is the first time they have an opportunity to compete.
"The majority of our women were not allowed to play women's sports in high school because they graduated before 1975," Bridget Rabb, La Crosse Does player and coach, explains.
"The law was passed around 1972 that provided title nine, providing sports for women. So before that time, there were no basketball teams, track teams, soccer teams, hockey, none of these sports that we have today," Rabb continues.
The Does will play next at a Granny Basketball tournament in the Iowa State Games starting June eighth.
