A La Crosse man dies when he's hit by a train Sunday morning in Winona.
Winona Police said that Sherod Maurice Frazier, 35, was fatally struck around 4:40 a.m. Sunday.
Police said that witnesses said Frazier was walking south, sped up, and tried to beat the train. Although the operator sounded the horn and tried to use the emergency brakes, the train wasn't able to stop in time. The train was traveling at 30 mph at the time of the collision.
It happened at the Canadian Pacific railway crossing on Carimona Street in between Howard Street and Mark Street.
A woman who was with him, Melanie Lynn Sampson, 39, of Chaseburg, Wisconsin, told police she had crossed the tracks and had her back to them when Frazier was hit. Police said Sampson was arrested after she gave a false name to officers and police learned she had an outstanding warrant in Wisconsin. She was taken in to the Winona County Jail on a misdemeanor charge.
