School honors Teacher Appreciation Day

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

Have you ever been able to read a book and understand the words on the page or make change from a $20 bill? You can thank a teacher for that.

The School District of La Crosse and the La Crosse Public Education Foundation celebrated Teacher Appreciation Day on Tuesday.

Educators at the North Woods International School enjoyed some pastries and fruits before classes began. A small gesture for the big role teachers play in the students' lives.

"I've got the little ones," Kindergarten Teacher Kate Hooper said. "So they get so excited about every little thing. I say everyday, 'this is why I love kindergarten'."

The food was provided through the La Crosse Community Foundation's Carol and Duane Taebel fund. Carol attended the North Woods gathering. A retired teacher, Carol says teachers don't get thanked enough.

"You are there for the kids morning and afternoon," she said. "They don't want to go home, some of them, after school. You are really like a second parent."

North Woods principal Sandy Brauer knows the rolls of teachers are demanding and always changing, but the career can be rewarding.

"If your heart tells you that teaching is for you, if you have a heart for children and for helping children learn, grow, develop and that's your calling, listen to that calling," Brauer explained.

Hooper's wondered what else she would do if she left the teaching field. For her though, she can't leave the kids behind.

"The kids are still the same. I mean they're coming from different situations obviously and our curriculum and what we do in schools is a lot different, but at the heart of it, I'm still working with five and six year olds," Hooper added.

This is part of teacher appreciation week where the School District of La Crosse will have events for the staff all week long.
