UW-La Crosse senior Carly Juswik won't get a break after graduating this weekend. Instead, she will embark on a 2 1/2 month journey biking across the country with Bike and Build.
" We will be biking from Key West Florida to the tip of Maine, the Canadian border for affordable housing, so we work to raise money, and as we bike on that route we also will build affordable housing units," Juswik explained.
The trip totals just around 3000 miles, and for Juswik, it is worth every stride.
" I do a lot of social justice work, and the more I learn about it, I realize that (affordable housing) is the central aspect to all of these things effecting around it in those marginalized communities, and so if you give someone a stable place to live, in a a stable environment, all of the other things are going to work to fall into place."
" Carly has grit, and I think that is one of the important characteristics in terms of not only helping people, but for the biking," Friend and Mentor Celia Mueller said. " It's long, and it's hard,"
" There is not much more I can do about it now," Juswik said." Once I am there, I am just going to go for it."
