He was Iowa's first four time state wrestling champion beginning in 1959. His name is Bob Steenlage, after whom an award is named for Iowa's wrestler of the year.
Steenlage took that skill to West Point Military Academy where he went four years never losing a dual match and earning Division 1 All American honors. Following his graduation from West Point, Airborne and Ranger schools, Steenlage distinguished himself again earning the Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. When he left the service, however, he began dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.
Steenlage recently spoke on the UW-La Crosse campus, talking about the disorder and his recent return to Vietnam to help deal with it. He went back with four of his sons to heal and help his family understand what he and other vets have experienced.
You can learn more about Steenlage in a couple of ways. Author Mike Chapman wrote a book about him called, "Fighting Back." You can also visit Steenlage's website at www.bobsteenlage.com.
