WAUSAU (WKOW) -- An unusual clue eventually led to a stolen Virgin Mary statue's return.
The statue was taken from outside St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wausau over the weekend of May 5-6. Church officials say after the crime, a volunteer noticed remnants of corndogs.
Police traced the corndogs to a nearby Kwik Trip, which had surveillance video. The video shows one of the three suspects carrying the statue away from the church as another person follows behind.
After reviewing the tape, an officer who was heading back to the police station saw two of the suspects, and they admitted to taking the statue.
"It reminds us that divine providence also has a sense of humor," said Father Aaron Huberfeld, with St. Mary's Catholic Church.
The statue will return to its pedestal in the garden outside the church during a ceremony Sunday. Until then, the statue will be stored inside.
Church officials decided not to press charges.
