Owners of former 'Maid-Rite' building seeking historic nomination

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

Owners of the former "Maid-Rite" restaurant building on La Crosse's north side are looking to officially designate it as a historic site.

The building, located at 1119 Caledonia Street, was home to one of the last Maid-Rite restaurants. It closed the doors in 2016 after 70 years in La Crosse.

The City of La Crosse's Heritage Preservation Commission will vote on its nomination Thursday night. According to Council Representative Jessica Olson, who serves on that commission, owner Joe Van Aelstyn is hoping that the building's community relevance and neighborhood impact will carry the nomination.

There was an order to raze the building by October of 2017, however that has been stayed through an injunction. Van Aelstyn is currently in the process of appealing the raze order in circuit court.

Van Aelstyn says he wants to turn it into a real estate office for himself. He has no intention of turning it back into a restaurant, saying that there is not nearly enough seating space to make it worth his while.
