Wisconsin's first IKEA brings out thousands to shop

OAK CREEK (WISN) - -

Shoppers lined up Wednesday morning to check out Wisconsin's first IKEA store.

The Swedish retailer estimated 10,000 people would come through the door of the new store, located off Interstate 94 in Oak Creek.

The Mayor of Oak Creek, the Swedish Embassy's head of Public Diplomacy and IKEA's U.S. Senior Vice President are there for the grand opening ceremony.

IKEA is known for its modern furniture and home decor.

Our Milwaukee affiliate station WISN compared the lines around the 290,000-square foot store Wednesday morning to people waiting at an amusement park.

The store has a 225,000-square foot solar array. IKEA says it will generate more than 2 million kWh of electricity, reducing the store's CO2 emissions.

Doors opened at 9 a.m.

WISN says IKEA will run shuttles from the College Avenue Park and Ride should the parking lot be full.
