The final bell of the school year will sound for many area schools by weeks end. As students look forward to their summer vacation, you'll have to be more watchful with the increase of pedestrian foot and bike traffic.
Many students across the area take advantage of the nicer weather during the summer months. Kids tend to travel to and from friends houses or area pools by walking or riding a bike. The increased activity all comes with summer vacation, but the La Crosse Police Department wants to make sure you're keeping an extra eye out around crosswalks and bike lanes.
Captain Jason Melby of the La Crosse Police Department says, "They're (kids) going to be out on their bikes. They're going to be in and out of the roads. Try to make sure you look out for the kids. They're probably going to be in their own neighborhoods and in the residential area a little more. So make sure when you're going through those residential areas and the kids are on the bikes, to be careful."
Captain Melby also advises parents to remind their kids to lock up their bikes after parking them at their destinations.
