The La Crosse Fire Department was called to the La Crosse County Landfill around 10:45 a.m.
A fire was reported in the main area of the landfill. According to the department, the fire was contained after an hour. Due to the challenges of getting water to the site, other area departments were called for assistance.
"The biggest challenge in this area is obviously a water supply. We put in a request for mutual aid, we requested Campbell and Shelby," said La Crosse Fire Battalion Chief Tom Wallerich.
The closest hydrant was approximately a quarter mile away.
Shortly after 1 p.m., the landfill was able to go back to normal operations.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
