Four candidates bumped off ballot after Election Commission meeting

MADISON (WKOW) -- -

The state's Election Commission bumped four candidates off the ballot who we’re planning on running for seats in the state Assembly.

Election commissioners voted unanimously Monday morning to knock off candidates who did not meet the commission's signature criteria, including Republican Jim Duncan, Democrat Maria Villarreal, Libertarian Thomas Leager and Democrat Charisse Daniels.

Daniels faced several challenges for false signatures on her nomination papers, which caught the attention of the Watertown Police Department opening their own investigation. Commissioners ruled 43 signatures were “fraudulently or improperly submitted.” State Rep. John Jagler who currently serves the 37th district will now be unopposed in November.  He posted to his Twitter account shortly after the ruling.

"I am pleased the members of the commission agreed with what we believe is very clear— these signatures were invalid," Jagler posted. "The people whose signatures were forged expressed outrage and a sense of feeling violated.”

Two candidates for governor were also challenged, Andy Gronik and state Rep. Dana Wachs. The commission rejected GOP complaints alleging two of Gronik's supporters, who collected signatures on his behalf, had felony convictions. Lawyers found both served their sentence and are eligible to vote.

“Circulators do not need to be Wisconsin residents and statutes specifically say a circulator needs to be either a qualified elector of the state, or if not, a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old," said Election Official Michael Hass.

Candidate Wachs faced complaints about incomplete nomination signatures, leaving some spaces blank or voters failed to identify what municipality they lived in. Commissioners rejected these claims.

U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Nicholson also made the cut and the commission voted to dismiss criticism he faced about supporters signatures.

Since the commission confirmed who’s on the ballot, the order for candidates is also official.

The order for democrats running for governor is:

1) Andy Gronik

2) Matt Flynn

3) Tony Evers

4) Josh Pade

5) Mike McCabe

6) Mahlon Mitchell

7) Kelda Roys

8) Paul Soglin

9) Kathleen Vinehout

10) Dana Wachs
