Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc. (Ashley) has partnered with local non-profit organization, Ashley's Angels, to donate 42 bicycles, helmets, and locks to area students in Whitehall, Arcadia, and Independence.
Ashley's Angels is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that provides food, clothing, blankets, and special gift requests for children in need. Ashley's Angels has generated over $3,000,000 in donations and benefited more that 20,000 children in Mississippi, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and North Carolina since 1997.
The donated bicycles were assembled during Ashley's Leadership Institute training as a team building exercise. The company chose the activity because of its impact on local schools and the community. The bike-building activity provided Ashley leaders with lessons in cooperation, collaboration, communication, and leadership.
"What a day for these fortunate students; the looks in their eyes after receiving the bike was priceless! We are so fortunate to have such a great resource like Ashley's Angels in our community to continue to brighten the lives of these students," said Paul Halverson, Arcadia Elementary School Principal. " Bike riding is fun and healthy, not to mention it's a great activity for the whole family to enjoy! Thank you Ashley's Angels!"
Each of the three schools received 14 bicycles to give away. Each giveaway included a 20 inch bicycle, a helmet, and a bike lock. The schools used a lottery styled giveaway that included all the students from the second and third grades.
