The view along Highway14/61 in La Crescent saw noticeable changes over the past month as the American Legion Building came down and it's place lays dirt and rubble where new development will soon go up.
Project Manager Andy Towner with Wieser Brothers Construction says next week contractors will begin laying foundation for the hotel and event center. In about two months time, walls will begin going up.
In the spot will be a three story tall Best Western Plus Hotel with 60 rooms. The event center will feature a bar and grill with space for the American Legion to hold meetings and belongings.
The city of La Crescent will update the parking and access to Veteran's Park in conjunction with the hotel and event center project, giving a new face to the gateway to the city.
"There's going to be a Renaissance here over the next five to 10 years and this is kind of kicking that off with some development downtown. I'm excited to see what spreads from that," Towner said.
"As our community grows, it's nice to have some of those features in the community," Mayor Mike Poellinger said. "Again it's one of those key pieces we thought we needed and we talked about for about five years."
The hotels anticipated opening is May 1. The new buildings and parking will not impact the Veteran's Park. The project's total cost isn't set as parts of it are still being bid out, but will be multimillion dollars.
