Medical Monday: Self-care is not selfish

Posted: Updated:

It's easy to neglect taking care of ourselves because many of us are busy and overwhelmed. When we're stressed, self-care is usually the first thing to go. And that only makes things worse.

Christie Harris,  Wellness Education Specialist at Gundersen Health System, explained how to make self-care a priority.

Why is it so difficult and why do we feel guilty about doing things for ourselves? Some look at self-care as selfishness, but self-care is not selfish, actually the real reason for self-care is far from it; it's about creating a culture in which self-care is a tool for disease prevention, personal empowerment and lifelong resilience.
When we put our own feelings first we tend to project positivity onto others which in turn creates healthy, happy relationships. Whether it is taking 15 minutes to do something we enjoy or getting sufficient sleep, we can inspire others to take similar actions.
The benefits of self-care are vast; here are just a few of the many benefits:
Self-care prevents burnout. Self-care helps you avoid getting to that point of just giving up due to feelings of being overwhelmed.
Self-care reduces negative effects of stress. Taking care of yourself means keeping your stress from taking over, so you can function at your best.
Self-care helps you refocus. Breaks are the heart of self-care, and studies show they're great for helping you perform better.
Even just a 15 minute break can help rejuvenate you. Start taking time for yourself and pour your positive vibes onto others.
