La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

Long time La Crosse business owner Dan Wettstein received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the La Crosse Tavern League Tuesday.

Wettstein's recently announced plans to close after 67 years in business.
Dan Wettstein received the award at the League's membership meeting held at The Ridge Restaurant just outside La Crosse on Highway 33.

League President Mike Brown and the Executive Director of Downtown Main Street Robin Moses surprised Wettstein with the award.

"I learned a long time ago that businesses need to coexist and there was a mindset that it use to be that the bar business was not good for the daytime business and that's not true.  The daytime business is a daytime business. Downtown La Crosse transforms into an evening business and those two have finally understood that they have to coexist in order to prosper," said Wettstein.

Long time friend Dave Clements says Wettstein has been doing good for the community long before people realized it.

"Fundraisers, charities, very involved in things like Mobile Meals.  Dan has been in Kiwanis since the 70's and he's on a lot of different board Boards.
I think it's an acknowledgment of what Dan and his family have done for the community for 67 years to make La Crosse a better place to live, work and play," said Clements.

The League, which has approximately 5,000 members, is open to anyone and not exclusive to bar and restaurant owners.
