Peace runners carry torch through La Crosse

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -

A group of long-distance relay runners stopped in La Crosse on Tuesday afternoon to promote the idea that world peace starts with an individual.

"Our motto is, 'Peace begins with me,'" said Arpan DeAngelo, a runner with the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run. "The message is that we want to see what other people feel about peace and what they're doing. So many, so many amazing events in communities--sporting events and art and culture--that are very good that don't get recognition."

The Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run started in 1987. Relay teams run in countries throughout the world carrying a torch. The torch represents ideas such as peace and freedom.

DeAngelo joins runners on a North American tour, running up to 11,000 miles in four months. The runners stop in communities like La Crosse along the way in an effort to see peace at work.

"Over the years, and I've done it many times, each time it gives me more and more a sense of hope and a positive sense of a good future for the world," DeAngelo said.

Runners sang songs with the kids at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater La Crosse and helped them pass the torch around.

Their next stop is in Madison on Thursday, July 11.
