The La Crosse County Judiciary and Law Committee voted on Tuesday night to put the referendum on the ballot this fall. The Executive Committee also voted in favor of adding it to the ballot at a meeting on Wednesday morning.

Tara Johnson, Chair of the La Crosse County Board, says it is time for the issue to be brought before the voters.

"The marijuana question is being raised around the state," Johnson said. "It's being raised around the country. It's being raised around the world. "

Johnson says Dane County and Milwaukee County have already voted to include the referendum on the November ballot. She says a number of other counties, like La Crosse County, are considering it.

"Most recently, Colorado among many other states have legalized marijuana and are using the revenue generated from that for programs and services that those governments support," she said.

The referendum will now go before the La Crosse County Board for approval. It must pass 70 days before the election in order to be included on the ballot.

The purpose of the referendum is to see where La Crosse County voters stand. It will not change any current laws and policies in place.
