Fitness for kids: Getting them off the couch

For many children, biking to the playground or playing a neighborhood game of kickball have been replaced with sitting on the couch playing video games or surfing the Internet for hours. It's never too late to get your children outside and active.
If you want your kids to be active, you must set a good example and be active as well. Park the car at the end of the parking lot and talk to you children about the importance of daily physical activity.
Limit the amount of time they spend in front of a screen to about two hours a day. Make this easier by eliminating a television or computer from your child's bedroom. Limit other activities such as text messaging or talking on the phone as well. Establishing a routine with your children is important. Set aside time everyday, preferably around the same time to get outside and do something with your child. Take into consideration what they like to do. For instance, if your child is a climber on the playground, take him or her on a hike. Let you children set the pace. If you are too intense, they will be less likely to want to be active and complain.
Finally, promote activity, not exercise with them. It sounds better to a child if they are going on a safari adventure than a walk. Be silly and use your, and your child's imagination, and let them pick the activity and get involved as well.
