S&S Cycle cut 60 workers this month just after the La Crosse-based company celebrated its 50th anniversary in June.
Company president Brett Smith says the cutbacks will be through voluntary separation and layoffs. He says the economic slump has hurt sales of the company's high-performance engine parts and engines for motorcycles.
All but two of the cuts were made at the company's Viola site in southwestern Wisconsin.
Smith says the company has a total of about 195 employees at both sites.
The company's core business is aftermarket components for motorcycles. Smith says that business is still is strong but there's less disposable income for parts.
He acknowledges that in the grand scheme of things, the company makes a product that people don't need to have.
