Getting SMART with Tools for Schools

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) – We’re graduating from this year’s Tools for Schools award recognizing a “SMART” project for a La Crosse classroom.

State Road School kindergarten teacher Teresa Fox is the final winner of the $750 award from SSE Music, Brenengen Auto and Dependable Solutions. Fox will use the money to integrate “Stimulating Maturity through Accelerated Readiness Training” or SMART materials in her classroom. She plans to purchase things like vinyl to create “slap tracks” and trampolines to use while teaching reading.

“The SMART curriculum helps develop the whole brain, so coordination, fine motor and large motor muscles and skills like that with crawling and slapping and then jumping and you can read, so you’re getting that visual coordination while you’re doing something else,” said Fox.

By integrating more physical movement with learning, Fox added kids can build a strong base at an early age.

“Doing the SMART curriculum can lead to reading achievement down the road with coordination, being able to sit still and build stamina. So, having this good foundation will be able to build on that in later years.”

Congratulations to all of our Tools for Schools winners from the 2018-2019 school year. You can see all of the projects funded by WXOW, SSE Music, Brenengen Auto and Dependable Solutions by clicking here.
