Experts say flu cases are on the rise compared to last year

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - Health officials say flu cases are on the rise right now, especially compared to last year.

Experts say the 2020 flu season was almost non-existent because people followed hygiene protocols like mask wearing and social distancing. Fewer people are adhering to those protocols this year, causing a spike in flu cases.

They say the best way to slow the spread of influenza is by getting a flu shot.

"The number one thing people can do is get vaccinated," Infection Preventionist with Gundersen Health System Meghan Buechel said. "It's easy and there are walk-in clinics, pharmacies, local public health vaccination sites that all have great and easy means for people to have protection against influenza heading into this season."

Buechel also recommended that people get their flu shot and COVID-19 booster shot at the same time.
