Thompson, UW System award "70 for 70" scholarships

MADISON, Wis. (WXOW) - UW System President Tommy Thompson said on Tuesday that they've awarded 70 students with $7,000 scholarships through the Vax Up! "70 for 70" campaign.

The students attend 11 UW System universities that took part in the campaign to achieve a 70 percent COVID-19 vaccination rate among students.

The 70 students were chosen through a random drawing.

Earlier this year, Thompson began the program to get students vaccinated against COVID-19 before returning for the fall semester. He set October 31 as the date for 12 universities to reach the 70 percent goal. All but one reached the goal. UW-Madison had its own campaign.

“We took up a challenge to educate and inform students as a part of a vaccination campaign to help keep our universities safe – and it has succeeded,” Thompson said. “What a thrill it is to be able to tell students they have won a $7,000 scholarship. I am so proud of our students, faculty, staff, and administrators who helped make this happen.”

To make the announcement of the successful program, the UW System released a short video showing Thompson convening a meeting of the "Board of Mascots" featuring all university mascots.
