Funeral services scheduled for Iowa State Trooper Ted Benda

WAUKON, Iowa (KWWL)- Funeral services for Iowa State Trooper who passed away from injuries sustained in a car crash will be held in Waukon next week.

Trooper Ted Benda passed away at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse on Wednesday. He was airlifted to the hospital after being seriously injured in a car crash while responding to a call to assist the Clayton County Sheriff's office on October 14.

According to the Martin-Grau Funeral Home, a public visitation is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Waukon. A public funeral will take place at Waukon High School at 11 a.m. Wednesday. A private burial will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Waukon.

Trooper Benda had been with the Iowa State Patrol since 2016. Most recently, he was stationed at the District 10 office in Oelwein. 

Trooper Benda was 37 years old. He leaves behind his wife, Holly and four young girls. He is also survived by his parents and other family members.

In place of flowers, plants or gifts, Benda's family asked for donations to the Ted Benda memorial fund at Freedom Bank in Waukon.

People crowded street corners in Waukon on Friday with signs and flags to honor Trooper Benda.

Police vehicles from all over Iowa lined Allamakee Street. They flashed their lights as the Iowa State Patrol escorted Trooper Benda's body from the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny to the funeral home.
